So we knew last week that there would be freezing temperatures this weekend. Saturday there was some of this in the afternoon:

From food, snow, garden

But it was off and on and wasn’t sticking.
I was not amused to wake up Sunday to this:

Because of the impending freeze I decided to see if I could save my very green tomatoes Friday afternoon.  I did pick off all the red ones first.

See the pumpkin?  I’m also trying to save the peppers.

After:

I put the light in there with a 125 watt bulb hoping to keep it a little warmer. It looks like a scene from ET to me. Did you see the pumpkin in the last picture before tenting?

We also ‘gleened’ a garden by my mom’s house. By garden I mean 1.5 acres of garden and fruit trees. Also? There was an electric fence that was on. Luckily I found out it was on the hard way rather then on of my girls. (Ouch!) But this is what we came home with:

I’m going to make some apple pie filling with these.  They’re a bit too tart for eating.

Decorative gourds.  I love the ones that are half yellow and half green.

Peaches I’m going to dry, plums my kids have eaten so many of they’re more then a little ‘runny’. If you know what I mean.

These peppers were incredible!

More gourds and a cantaloupe!

From food, snow, garden

Gourds on the bottom, butternut squash and acorn squash on the top with another cantaloupe.

These are banana squash- apparently they’re supposed to get this big?

More fruit.

From food, snow, garden

Fresh corn, tomatoes and a few peppers.

From food, snow, garden

Second bag of tomatoes.

From food, snow, garden

25 Quarts of spaghetti sauce.  I only used one bag of tomatoes. I need to do the other bag.  Problem is that canning causes neglect of children. It also is very messy.

My sauce.

My kitchen was totally trashed.

WOW! That is so awesome! All of that produce made me all jealous and depressed about my patch of frozen tomatoes after the snow. I knew I should have forgone the Friday night date for a bit of garden saving.

So, by gleening do you mean stealing? (I mean, if there was an electric fence…) I think we won’t be expecting any blog posts from you for a couple of weeks. You’ll be holed up in your kitchen, Holly!!!!

Wow, I’m impressed! I did some canning about a week and a half ago, but it was only 10 jars of pears. You put me to shame! The amount of produce you brought home was amazing. Your garden and the snow are making me miss Utah. I LOVED living there.

Oh my gosh, that’s a lot of food! It looks delish. There’s nothing better than garden-grown veggies.

Um, there’s a little bit of grass in my yard… that’s about it. haha.

    Wow! What a haul!

Despite my abhorence of weeding that makes me want to garden more next year!

Apparently wrapping green tomatoes in newspaper and leaving them for awhile allows them to ripen on their own.
