Random people who’ve made me smile lately
Published by amberlicious September 9th, 2008 in blah blah blahI just looked out the window and saw something sweet I needed to share and it caused me to reflect on the last couple of days and some nice random acts of kindness I’ve experienced or seen lately.
Today is garbage day. My girls are riding bikes with a couple neighbor kids around our circle. I’m sitting in my living room working on editing my book with the windows open so I can supervise the bike riding going on in the cul-de-sac. Of course the kids are fascinated with the garbage truck, it’s big and loud and is dumping garbage cans! (We have the large roller cans and the truck with the arm that picks them up.) So the kids are following the truck and stopping at every can to watch. The garbage man talked to the kids for a few seconds to say hello, ask them how they were doing and nicely remind them to stay where he could see them and on the sidewalk. There were no adults outside- he didn’t know that I was watching and listening. I’ve also seen the garbage man in this neighborhood retrieve cans that were forgotten on garbage day from the top of the driveway, empty it, and then return it to the top of the driveway.
In our old neighborhood we had issues with truck drivers (UPS, FedEx, the garbage man, pizza delivery guys) speeding recklessly down our street. In this neighborhood the UPS driver comes frequently, and slowly. He hits the brakes and watches out for kids. I really appreciate that.
We had an ER visit last night. I was freaking out. I’m still not quite ready to talk about it (everyone is okay now) but as we were going in to the triage nurse a woman (complete stranger) who was being called back with her son that had a broken arm to the back at the same time put her arm around me and wished us luck.
When we got back to the room that they were assigning us to I was freaking out even more from the triage nurse’s quick and urgent response and they brought us to a room that was still being cleaned up. The medic was putting the sheets on the bed and the housekeeping woman was emptying trash. After they left the housekeeping woman came back in the room and put her hand on my arm and asked if she could bring me something to drink. The ER was hopping last night and I’m sure she had tons to do- it was a very thoughtful gesture and really helped to calm me down.
What are some Random Acts of Kindness you’ve seen or experienced lately?

My neighbor comes and gets Bennett every Sunday night. She cuddles him and loves him and brings him home asleep. It helps me get my other kids in bed and regain my sanity.
My other neighbor saw me looking haggard this morning when I picked Macy up from orchestra. She offered to take her and bring her home because she’s an early riser and knows I’m not.

We bought a tree on Saturday, and I was expecting it to take us all week to dig a hole big enough to plant it. ( 32″ wide x 16″ deep) I told my neighbor ( 70+ widow) about my plan to dig a little each day and hopefully get it done by the weekend. On Monday night she came over with her shovel and offered to help. Within 1/2-3/4 hour we had the hole dug and the tree in place!!!
That was a beautiful post Amber. Well done. I am going to contemplate the good people around me today.

I just love when teenage boys hold the door open for me! I always make it a point to thank them, even say that their mother would be proud. It’s such a little thing, but it really brightens my day.
And? I’m glad everyone is okay now…big hugs!
