The one titled: “I just couldn’t do it” or “Bytheway I’m refusing to pack”

$2.19 today. No, not for gas (that would be fabulous) but for a single pepper. For ONE pepper. Luckily we’ve got some in the freezer- but not the same as fresh peppers for salads and sandwiches etc.

Luckily I’ve planted a garden this year:

I’ve planted 28 pepper plants. We really like peppers here- and they freeze well for stuff like stir fry, fajitas, chicken cacciatore etc. I’ve also planted pumpkin, cantaloupe, acorn squash, butternut squash, celery, zucchini, cilantro, basil, and 3 different types of tomatoes (not including my upside down tomatoes) and strawberries.

Over in this corner:

We’ll be ripping out weeds and making a compost pile- surrounded by raspberry bushes. We’ll be ripping out a lot of weeds actually, and putting down weed carpet and bark pieces, then surrounding the whole garden area with rocks. So it will be pretty eventually.

The cages/soccer net thingys are for growing stuff up. I’m training the tomatoes, the cantaloupes, the pumpkins and all the squashes to ‘climb’. I’m quite excited by that. I’ll keep you update to how that goes.

We’ve officially purchased the house now (well, the mortgage for the house) now all that’s left to do is move. We don’t even start that process until the 23rd though.

Have I mentioned my plan? The one where I’m refusing to pack? My mother-in-law is coming on the 22nd to help us move- and we’re going to do it room by room for a week- putting things away as we go. No need for hundreds of boxes, no need for packing tape and 2 weeks to pack and 2 months to unpack. I’m moving less then 5 miles away, we’ll have both places for a while- I’m taking advantage of it.

Are you growing a garden this year?
What veggies are you/would you grow?
What was your best move?
Am I crazy for not packing?

  1. I’m growing a garden this year with only 4 pepper plants. I sound like a garden-wuss. How do you freeze them? Do you chop and blanch?

I think the gradual move sounds tempting, but I don’t know if in practice I could do it myself . . . I might go crazy with all of that work hanging over my head. Once I have a job to do, I want to dive in and get it done!

  2. I might copy your style of moving…that is after I get a report of how it went.

  3. I freeze peppers by just slicing and then throwing in baggies and freezing. I’m sure they might freeze nicer if you laid them flat on a cookie sheet or something first and then threw them in a baggie- but I’m lazy.

  4. I so miss my Utah garden. Things grow so well up there. My fridge/freezer used to be packed with zucchini breads/cakes and homemade tomato sauce. No “easy” garden is one more Vegas downfall.

  5. We did the room by room when we were growing up. It worked awesome! I wish I was doing a garden this year, but we just didn’t get it done with everthing else. My Dad has a square foot garden and loves it. He will be helping me build everything this year to do my planting next year.

  6. That is an amazing garden! Mmmm, fresh raspberries. I wish we could grow raspberries in Texas. And I think the moving room by room thing is a good idea. You’ll have to let us know how it worked. Good luck!

  7. It will be interesting to see if all those big plants fit in that space by growing up. I wonder where you got the idea of the compost pile surrounded by raspberry bushes… :)

  8. Do your peppers freeze well while still on the plant? We had snow early this morning. Right onto $70 worth of plants in our garden!

  9. We have tomatoes, strawberries, green onions and honeydew melons. We have a ton of tomatoes but they haven’t turned red yet. All of a sudden there are 4 honeydew melons that I hadn’t even noticed before! I am not much of a gardener so this is more experiment!

  10. No garden…just idle thoughts about growing one. I’m scared to ever start in Las Vegas. Guess I’ll have to move to Utah!

  11. Great work on the garden. I still don’t get how it works. I’ve tried to “train” my tomatoes for 3 years now and well they are bushes. They’re good anyway.

We are growing peppers (medium and hot), tomatoes, butternut, banana, and zucchini squash, cabbage, carrots, green beans, lettuce, spinach, onions, basil, oregano, cilatro, parsley, and strawberries. It’s a lot of work to get it all planted!

I can’t believe the price of produce right now either. Our green peppers are up in price too, but I bought one.

I think you are so smart to not pack. It’s just a big mess. Room by room, carload by carload, putting away as you go is WAY BETTER than boxes and loading and unloading and looking for everything you can’t find, etc. I’m helping my BF Emily move right now to Pittsburg and it’s a lot. I wish we could do it room by room.

  12. So, I have tomatoes, corn, and basil. My cucumber died a horrible death–probably due to those pesky cucumber bugs. I’ve only gotten to half of my garden. So much to do. I also have raspberried through no fault of my own (they were here before we got here.)

Love fresh tomatoes so they are a must!

  13. YAY for gardens! My peas, onions, lettuce, spinach, ad carrots are up now…and we are still waiting on the corn, beans, potatoes, and cucumbers. Our 8 little peppers, and 11 tomato plants are struggling for life through the SNOW that flew today! RUDE RUDE RUDE. COME ON Idaho…IT IS JUNE…catch up with the times here! GRRR.

  14. That is cool that you are into gardening. I was excited to have space for a yard, but found that we didn’t have room in our life for gardening. Someday, maybe. But for right now it seems every plant I touch dies. Kudos to you!
I wish we could move like that. We’ve already packed half of the house to get it sold, which is a pain when I need something that I have already packed.

  15. I have a garden too, but just two squares, and one isn’t quite full. I’ve planted bean seeds twice, and none have come up yet! I don’t know what I’m doing wrong.
I’ve planted two bushes in the corner by that cement pad with space behind them for a compose pile. Hope they grow fast to hide it! Tomatoes and peppers seem to be doing fine so far. Peas are out of control, and don’t have any flowers on them- just all plant. I need to get around to pruning them.
Hope the moving one room at a time works. Which room are you starting with?

  16. We have tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers. mint, basil, thyme. We only garden a small space, but Michael made it a little bigger this year so we have more tomato plants than ever and are hoping to get enough to can some. I already have jars so I would only have to buy lids and bands.

We planted three California Wonder peppers and one Egyptian something hot kind that the chili woman at the Farmer’s Market helped Michael pick. In tomatoes we planted one slicing kind, one cherry kind and some Romas for the canning.

Michael is the better gardener and he is off to his dad’s. Last year I killed quite a bit of garden by not watering while he was gone. This year we have had so much rain that if it keeps up we won’t have to worry about me killing the garden. Michael also weeds more often and more thoroughly, while I am lazy and hate it and am tempted to use chemicals. Today I have on my list of items to do to put down some mulch. I hope if I get that done it will help keep the weeds down a little better while Michael is gone.

Sometimes I get mad at Michael for the dumb things he does, but when I think about things like this and how wonderful he is I am so grateful to have such a good son.

Hope’s last blog post..LIsts and last night:

  17. First off, you know it’s not me growing anything, it’s Greg. We have corn, peas, lettuce, kumquats, apricots, strawberries, apples, tomatoes, peppers and some thyme and basil.

  18. We have a garden this year but once again…we are a little late on actually planting it. We have peas and strawberries…and some weeds…and rocks…yeah, that’s about it.

When we moved to our current house, it was chaotic because the new owners’ tenants tried to move in before a) we had moved out and b) before we had actually sold the place. Makes for an interesting experience.

Go try Flylady.net! She has a moving plan that is supposed to be awesome.
