SOS: The Boy who wouldn’t talk
So- I’ve done a couple Soap Opera Sundays- but then I decided to take Sundays off from the computer. Um, today I’ve got some stuff I need to do and inevitably I get sucked in. (I had two days without internet earlier this week- I’m playing catch up).
Soap Opera Sunday is hosted by Brillig and Kate.
I had a friend in High School (actually that’s an interesting story too) who I hung out with a ton my Junior year. We’ll call her Jane (because we ended the friendship on bad terms- and I don’t know where she is now- and her name is pretty unique). So Jane’s cousin was coming to visit from out of state and had never been on a date before. Jane, being a nice cousin, decided she’d set him up with one of her friends and they’d go on a double date. Since we hung out a ton she asked me if I’d go out with him. I figured ‘how bad could it be?’ I figured wrong.
Jane and her cousin, whom we’ll call Jack (because I can’t remember his name) came and picked me up to go out to dinner in Provo. Jane’s date was also already in the car. It seems like there was another random couple there too. The drive to the restaurant was about 20 minutes. He didn’t say a word the entire time. Not even, ‘hi, I’m Jack, nice to meet you’. I’m pretty sure that when they picked me up Jane came to the door to ask for me. We went down to a fairly nice restaurant called The China Lily. We waited for about 10 minutes before being seated and although I tried to start conversations with him by the time we were seated I was completely frustrated and pretty much just talked with the other people we were doubling with.
I don’t remember if we did anything after dinner or not- the date isn’t too clear in my mind- except that I’m positive he didn’t utter a word the entire time I was present. Pretty sure the reason he hadn’t been on a date yet was because you have to actually utter words to ask someone out.
Just to clarify- it wasn’t that he didn’t talk to me- he didn’t talk to anyone there. Not a single word. If you asked him a question he’d just stare at you, or ignore you all together. Seriously, silence. I remember talking to my friend about it later- ‘he’s just really shy’. Um, okay.

On a random side note…Blake’s favorite place to eat in Provo is China Lily.
It sucks when someone doesn’t talk. Did he talk to anyone?
Yikes!
Blind dates are hard enough without your date not talking.

Weird, what a weird guy. I would like to know how he turned out.

Oh, dude. He sounds awesome. It reminds me of one of MY bad blind ates! (Don’t you love how others’ posts inspire ideas for yours?) We’ll just say he started off by saying in a Dude Voice, “So, uh, I hear you’re like, smart er somethin’.” Yeah.
aah I once had an oral exam like that. Not a word did he say (we had received the questions on paper) . I didn’t know when to start the next question or when to leave, but eventually I did leave when I had no more inspiration to talk.
it’s very very creepy when people don’t talk at all. thank goodness you were triple dating that evening!
oh and thanks for playing, so that I am not the only SOS player this weekend.

Now you’ve made me curious as to who “Jane” is…
I love China Lily. Ah… Provo. “jack” must have been clinically shy (I think that’s what they call it) or maybe just strange.
What is an SOS? I am new and I don’t know what that means.
You found out years later that he was totally mute didn’t you? You handled it so much better than I would have. Sorry the friendship ended on a downer note. And just the mention of China Lily brought back SOOOOO many memories.
