Book #5- Self Made Man by Norah Vincent

I picked up this book thinking that it sounded interesting.  It chronicles a year of Norah Vincent’s life as she infiltrates the lives of men by living as a man.  It’s a true story.  Her language is horrible.  I skipped entire chapters of the book (the chapter about the strip club and surprisingly enough the chapter about working as a man). She has some interesting insights about men and male world- but she’s surprisingly bitter and hateful towards men at the same time as she pities them.  She ends up having a breakdown at the end of her time as ‘Ned’ and has to be hospitalized to ‘detox’ from her mans world.

It’s an interesting concept- but I certainly think it could have been better written. I also think that she started the project with a bias towards men and a contempt for them.  She basically concludes that all men are dogs with a mommy complex. I think you find what you look for- which she did.
