Book #3- The Glass Castle
The Glass Castle by Jennette Walls
This is a memoir that I found fascinating from the first page to the last. I’ve recommended this book to at least a dozen people so far and would suggest you go get it now and read it. Jennette Walls is a contributor to MSNBC. Her story is about her childhood- one that you’d not expect to hear from a successful writer. She was the third of four children of parents who didn’t parent at all. They rarely made money or lived in suitable housing. Spending money on alcohol and painting supplies were more important then making sure that their children ate. It is completely uncomprehensible to me. It’s a story that as a mother makes me both sad and angry. But the way she shares it doesn’t make you feel pity. Jeannette and her siblings grew in spite of their lack of upbringing and parenting and despite the fact that they rarely ate were able to get outstanding grades and education in public school (when they attended). It’s an amazing story of the resilance of the human spirit, and of grace.

One of my friends recommended this to me. She said it reminded her of the some of the chaos that our childhoods shared. I am going to try to get it as soon as I get my library fines paid off!
