Today’s Project

So tonight was a church thing celebrating the birthday of the Relief Society (women’s organization in our church). Anyway, I was asked to make a cake. I made a marble cake using chocolate (yum) and white cake that I added mini chocolate chips to. It didn’t ‘marble’ well and my top layer completely fell apart when I removed it from the pan. Luckily I had a frozen cake from Ashley’s birthday in the freezer that was the right size so I used that. I was really frustrated all around with this cake and it took much longer then it should. Everyone loved it (and was loving the taste too) and I got a lot of compliments, which makes a girl feel good. It wasn’t my favorite cake ever though.

I need to learn how to photograph food better too. Any tips?

  1. I think the cake is lovely! Rolled fondant?
    I bet it was delicious!

  2. Looks delicious! You have a talent.

When photographing food, DO NOT use a flash. Instead, go for natural lighting and take the pic at different angles. Never from up above. Next time you go to a restaurant… like that happens so often for you :)… pay attention to the angles of the photos in the menu. That will help.

    YUM!!

  3. Very spectaular! And if it was chocolate, I am sure it tasted good too. Yum.

  4. Your cake talent is so mind boggling to me!

Yet another gorgeous fantastic cake. Wish I could have had a slice.

  5. I can’t photograph food, either. But neither can professionals: there are people whose WHOLE JOB is to make FAKE FOOD (”vanilla ice cream” out of scoops of Crisco, “milk” out of glue) just so it’ll look good in photographs.

  6. You should go onto my website and look at the cakes under quirt. It looks fabulous, I still have never tried using fondant.

  7. Fabulous cake!

I use a photo editing program sometimes just to brighten up my shots. You need pretty incredible lighting to do your work justice, I think.

  8. I was there and tried the beautiful cake. It was soooo wonderful. Amber is so talented. It looked beautiful. I wish I had your talent!!

  9. It tasted as good as it looks, thanks for all your work for us!

  10. Yep, Swistle is right. Photographing food is hard when it’s actual food. But that said, your cake is really lovely. Decorating was my LEAST favorite thing to do back when I was baking professionally, so I’m very impressed!

  11. I have no photography skills, but I can tell you what not to do! Don’t take a photo of a cake served on top of a wilton cake/cupcake server. To see why not, view the dessert I made for my hubby on Valentine’s Day. It didn’t taste as good as the recipe sounded and I mentioned that. But one of my good friends e-mailed me to let me know that it probably would have tasted better if I hadn’t served it on what appeared to be a “toilet seat!” Ha! I’ve always loved the photos of your cakes. You rock!

I’m too eager to wait for my MS’s birthday to try that Spiderman cake, so I’m hoping to make it for his half birthday in a few weeks. Hope it turns out.

Also, a bit jealous you were able to meet Lucy of lifeisaspasmwhoflow. Too bad I’m so far away from Utah! Glad you guys had fun though.
