It could be worse…

We play a game at dinner when people start to complain (usually about what we’re eating- but Steve and I have been known to whine about other things as well).  Basically it usually starts out with ‘I hate squash’ (Or whatever we’re eating for dinner).  Someone will say, ‘it could be worse…’ and tell us how it could be worse.  It seems like, ‘we could be eating poop for dinner’ is always one way it could be worse. I know- great dinnertime conversation going on here.

Anyway, I feel like I whine a lot when I move.  Since we’ve decided moving every couple of months is fun then I whine a lot. I’m sorry.  Everyone moves, it’s hard for everyone, and basically it could be worse.  Although moving day was almost comical and ‘it could be worse’ kept going through my head.

So we were moving.

But it could be worse.  We could be moving on my birthday.

Oh wait.  We were.
It could be worse!  We could be moving in the rain.

Oh wait- we did.

Well- it could be worse.  We could be moving in the snow.

And then?

(That white stuff coming down? Snow.  On September 29.  Happy birthday to me.  I HATE snow).

But on the bright side- we got all moved in. We had lots of help from friends who it seems just moved us in. We had (new) neighbors who saw the truck and came to help.  Our new neighborhood is incredibly friendly.

The guy below is Eugene.  He was our next door neighbor.  He helped us move stuff off our first truck when we got to Utah.  Then he helped us move stuff off the trailer that we brought up two weeks later.  The one we drove up in the rain and arrived at 10:30 pm.  Then the next day he helped us move stuff back onto the trailer to take to the storage unit.  Then a couple weeks later he helped us with more stuff off another trailer.  I’m pretty sure Eugene is the perfect neighbor. All of those times he helped us?  Not once was he asked.  He just showed up and started helping.

It’s been a week today.  I’m feeling like we live here now and I’m already happy with our decision to move. Even if it is just for a year I can already feel a difference in my emotional state just being in a house and having sunlight coming through my windows.

I feel like we’re actually getting better at this moving thing.  I have really enjoyed the numbering system for packing in relation to finding things that I want to unpack first.  It’ll be my biggest suggestion for everyone now.

We hosted our first dinner party Friday night.  My next door neighbor is awesome and we’re carpooling to and from school already.  The younger girls already have little neighbor girls asking if they can play.  I’m feeling pretty settled.  I’ve still got a ton to unpack- but the benefit of having an unfinished room is there is a place to store boxes that aren’t emptied yet.

Pictures of the new place coming soon.

  1. You ARE getting good at this, and what a relief to be somewhere that feels homey. You’ve earned it for sure!

  2. I can’t believe that you’ve already hosted a dinner! That’s impressive…really, it is! We’ve been here in this house for almost 13 years and we’ve only hosted a few dinners…

  3. Sooooo…am I invited to the house-warming party? :)

  4. Congratulations on not needing to move again for a whole year! (Really, you will need to start packing again in 11 months if you decide to relocate again, but hopefully that would be into a house you’re purchasing, so it would be okay.)

  5. You are hilarious. Whine away. You deserve it. It could be worse…but not by much:)

  6. Yea Amber. You made it!!!!! It could be worse, you could have done it 7 months pregnant (been there, done that.) Or you could have had a broken leg. Whazzup with the snow? We didn’t get any here, but I’m about the only one I know.

  7. I left a comment last night, but it didn’t take I guess. Here’s a redo to the best of my memory.

At least you don’t have to move now for a whole year. Actually, if you do decide to move you will be packing things up in 11 months, but hopefully it would be because you are buying a house, so then it would be okay to move.

  8. I can’t wait to see the pictures of your house! I am sorry you had a bummer of a birthday moving! Next year!!!

  9. Glad that you are all settled in now and the new place is feeling like home:)

I say we all *need* to have a Eugene living next door..what a nice bloke he must be :)

Am really enjoying your blog and am off now to add you to the blogroll at www.madgoatlady.com

  10. So glad the move is done. And here’s hoping in all your new neighbors there is a “Eugene”. I want a Eugene.
