Happy Birthday to ME!

Since we’re moving on my birthday (that’s on the 29th if you want to come help or send your buff honey to come help) we went out tonight to celebrate. We left the kids with my mom and went to an early movie and dinner.  I’ve been wanting to see Harry Potter since months before it came out. I was planning to see it the week after it opened.  Then Steve got an ear infection and couldn’t hear, then the kids were sick or I was sick or we were out of town.  Anyway- so I decided that I wanted to see it for my birthday. So earlier this week I told Steve, ‘I’ve decided what I want to do for my birthday’.  Steve told me that he’d just figured out what he wanted to do for my birthday. Luckily they were the same exact thing. (Phew!)

Harry Potter 5 is my favorite book.  I enjoy the DA and the rebelliousness of Fred and George.  I was really worried that I wouldn’t love the movie.  But I’ve not read the book in several years- which I think helped me enjoy the movie more.  I really liked it.  I would have liked to have seen more of Fred and George and Harry looked different (but certainly not in a bad way) with the crew cut. Umbrige was simply evil. The actress who played her did a fabulous job. Overall it was great.

We enjoyed some Red Lobster for dinner (yummy coconut shrimp!) and picked up the kids early enough that Ashley got to ’stay’ and have a sleepover.  We also picked up an entire carload of boxes. The handy thing about moving several times and for the same several times as someone else is that you get to reuse the same boxes over and over.  We collected lots of boxes for our first move- too many actually and left the leftovers with my mom. She used them to move up here.  Then she saved the good ones in her garage for us to use for this move.  If we have enough storage space (which we most likely will since we’ll have a crawl space and a garage and two unfinished rooms) we’ll save the best ones to use when we move in a year.

But all those boxes means the packing starts tomorrow.  Exactly one week from the move in date.  Well- I’ve already packed four boxes- but tomorrow Steve and I are going to knock out a ton more then that.  I’m trying a different method of labeling this time. You number each box and then put which room it goes into. Then you keep a master list of the numbers.  On the masterlist you can put a lot more information on what’s in the boxes. Then when you need to find something you can hopefully find it easier. Also when you unpack you start with the highest numbered boxes first.  Which were the last packed. I’m hoping this will be helpful.

Of course in a couple of weeks we get to move the storage unit.  Wahoo! (Can you feel the sarcasm?)

**So what do you like to do for your birthdays?  What are some packing and moving tips you’ve picked up?  How do you speed up the unpacking process?**

  1. Happy Birthday (early) I’m glad you thought to celebrate early! You get a new home for your birthday!

  2. So glad your birthday got to be celebrated properly!

Best move we ever did? We numbered each box, put the number on a spread sheet, and wrote a general idea what was each box. Unpacking was soooo easy! Where are the glasses? Oh, box number 29!

  3. I have so not perfected the moving thing. So stressful and chaotic. I hope it goes well for you.

For birthdays dinner and a movie sounds great. We’re in a city right now (Garden City, KS) that actually has a theater, but with a toddler and an infant I don’t think we could handle it. But we’re celebrating my b-day tonight by going to dinner and Walmart. Aren’t you so jealous? (rolling eyes) On my actual birthday Josh will be working and we’ll be back in our town that has no real restaurants. I can’t wait to move…probably 2 or more years down the road. Sigh…

    Happy early birthday!

  4. Throw it all away!

    That’s my best moving tip!

    :)

  5. Well, you know how I feel about Mr. Potter. ;-) Still, I’m glad you had a nice night out, and happy birthday!!!

And good luck with the move. It’s a big, fat pain. Sigh. So… yeah. Have fun with that.

  6. For my birthday, I celebrate all week. Each day I do some little thing that is just for ME! And since we have the same birthday, my birthday week is in full swing. Today, I ate a chocolate car, which is not unusual, as I frequently do this. But this chocolate was one of those over-priced but oh-so-tempting ones from Target. Very tasty!

As far as moving goes, flylady.org has some GREAT tips! Wish I had known about her before we had our double move.

  7. Glad you had a fun time for your early birthday.

Only moving tip I tried to use once, but the movers didn’t cooperate, is to put the bedding for every bed in the house in one box( or two if there’s too much) so you have bedding together to make everyone’s bed as soon as the beds are put together. Label the box- Current bedding.
Our movers took half my stack of bedding and put it in the bottom of one box, and the other half in the bottom of another box! No help at all.
