The 100 Year Flu

When we lived in Las Vegas we had what they called The 100 Year Flood. It was the sort of flood that we usually only saw once in one hundred years. Of course in the 11 years I lived in Las Vegas we had two 100 Year Floods. Not sure how that works. Anyway- here in our house we’re in the midst of what I’m hoping is a 100 Year Flu. That is- a flu that will never curse our home again, well, at least not for another 100 years. (Don’t continue from here if talk of bodily fluids- specifically throw up and diarrhea makes you squeamish).
It hits hard and it hits fast. It all started on August 3. That’s right AUGUST THIRD. Ugg. We’d spent the day at Lagoon and all was well. We had a great time. About 10:45 right as we were leaving Annika started complaining that her stomach hurt. By the time we got home and put her in bed she was puking. This was all Friday night. By Sunday she was running a fever of 104.5 and I couldn’t get it to go down. She’d also not kept down any food or liquid since Friday. We made a trip to the ER where they ran a bunch of tests and gave her IV fluid. By Wednesday she was feeling better.

By Friday we’d sent Megan with my mom and sister to go pick Ashley up in Wyoming where she’d spent the week at the camp where my other sister was working for the summer. We thought we’d dodged a bullet and no one else had caught this horrible bug.

We’d thought wrong.

Megan started throwing up while camping with Grandma.

She continued for the next several days. But she never got the fever. She never even ‘felt’ sick. She’d throw up in her sleep and not even wake up. By Monday night (the 13th if you’re keeping track) she was fine. All seemed well until the 16th (Thursday). Cori started with the diarrhea. She was clingy and ran a low grade fever but never seemed to get the puking part. That is until Monday morning when she started crying about 4am (which is normal) and we ignored her (which is also normal) and then we discovered about 7am that she’d puked during the night. Most likely why she was crying. Guilty much? Yeah.

Tuesday Steve was feeling ‘off’ enough that he stayed home from work. I’ve been ‘off’ all week. Not really sick, but not feeling fabulous either. Then yesterday Annika started puking again. Of course her fever is sky high.

Ashley says she’s not feeling so great either. Her stomach hurts. Pretty sure she’s getting it too. I feel like we need to each be quarantined to a different room for a week to get rid of this. Of course there aren’t enough rooms in our apartment for that- or enough tvs. Pretty sure we’ve watched every movie we own at least twice. Some more then that.

Hopefully this is the last of it.

  1. Oh, yikes. It sounds awful. Our family actually did a similar thing about a month ago. NOT FUN!!!! I really hope that this is the last of it for you too. Yuck.

  2. Ugh! Sorry you’re going through it, especially with little ones who don’t grasp the concept of a “barf bowl.” I just cannot handle the puking…I had my husband sign a sort of pre-nup that said he would take care of throw up. I’ve had to invoke that contract a couple times.

  3. I’m sorry to hear you’re all so sick. I hope you are on your way to being well soon.

  4. UGH YUCK!! I hate it when that happens. Life would almost be so much easier if everyone in the family just got it at once and it was over. Poor little Annika got it twice? Where’s the fairness in that? Hope you all feel better.

  5. Oh, man! I’m sorry you guys are going through that! I think I’d run away from home. . .

  6. Yuckity-yuck-yuck-yuck! (had to up the other commenters on the yuck scale, you know)

    Hope it passes soon!

  7. I hope you and Steve never fully get what everyone else has had. It’s no fun being sick as the parent.

  8. I’m sorry you’ve all been so sick! :(

  9. I am so, so sorry! Having sick kids is THE WORST. And the puking part is horrible! It’s like you feel so trapped. Trapped in this stinky dungeon, unable to see the light of day. I hope this is the end of it all for your family for another 100 years.

  10. Man, am I glad you called off our park date! I don’t want to get anywhere near that potent little bug. But I do hope you find yourself surrounded by better smelling kiddos real, real soon.

And I hope you don’t get it too!

  11. […] It seems that I get so wrapped up in all that we’re going to do that I forget about the other stuff.  You know- like laundry and dishes and general pickup and the 100 Year Flu. Don’t get me wrong, we did fun stuff this summer. We did go to the library once, and the park several times- just not in any orderly fashion.  We never did make it to the zoo or the science museum, but that’s largely due to financial constraints rather then time constraints. We did go camping once also- but it was a large event planned by someone else and all I had to do was get us there. I did make Ashley do worksheets a couple of times- but not nearly the daily work I was going to have her do. But it seems that lately the tv is on nearly constantly and it’s nearly noon before  I make everyone get dressed and I shower myself- mostly because Steve comes home for lunch on a daily basis and I don’t want him to think that he’s off working hard while we’re lounging around on a daily basis. 12. Wow that sounds like one miserable bug. Feeling so bad for you all!

  13. […] has been sick this week. It’s a reoccurring illness that she’s been getting since the 100 Year Flu of August 07. (Doesn’t that sound official and long ago-even though it was only a couple […]
