Decisions Decisions

I hate making big decisions. HATE.  I feel like we’re at a place where we can go so many different directions. But I also feel homeless.  I hate our apartment.  It works- it’s functional.  But there are so many things about it I hate.  Knowing that we were just going to be here six months is something that’s pulled me though mostly.  I’ve really only had one meltdown about the place (sorry Steve).  But now we’re at the point where we need to make a decision.  We have to tell the management by the end of the month if we’re leaving the end of September or if we’re going month to month or signing another 6 month lease.

I’ve been looking at houses.  I think I’m up to house #1,938.  My Realtor has been fabulous and I’ve really liked her a lot. Super patient.

Here are the problems:

#1- it’s hard to say what the Utah market is going to do.  In a lot of places in Utah houses aren’t selling.  Prices are dropping.  But in our county? They’re still selling.  So is it going to continue to go up here?  Or is it going to drop in a couple of months (right after we buy?)

#2- I’ve not seen anything that I LOVE.  I LOVED my house in Vegas.  A lot.  I’m having a hard time because I just feel like nothing really compares.  Or it’s close- but it’s at the very top of our barely affordable price range and in order to really be big enough we’d need to finish the basement- as well as fence the backyard.

#3- Apparently Steve’s company is thinking about moving.  Moving 45 minutes from where we are.  Know how much that would suck for Steve’s commute?

So we’re trying to decide what we should do.  Should we buy a house now that works and hope that the market doesn’t tank and Steve’s company doesn’t move?

Should we go month to month on our apartment until we find the perfect house and then hope the market doesn’t tank and Steve’s company doesn’t move?

Should we sign another six month lease and suck it up and hopefully know more in 6 months?

Should we rent a house that I can stand to live in for a year and then look for a house to buy?

Sigh…  I wish I could see the future.

  1. I vote that you should keep renting, either the apt or another house. The market will continue to go down over the next year, and if you’ve been saving up, you’ll be in a really good position to buy. Plus, with Steven’s job moving, it seems it would be good not to be tied down until you know for sure. Good luck! I hate big decisions, too.

  2. Oh Amber I am with you. I HATE making these life changing decisions when you don’t know what’s going to happen. I’m sure you’ll get steered into the direction you need to go, even if you don’t realize it until you look back after a couple of months time. that’s how it always works for me.

  3. That’s the pitts. Good luck. We are transferred often, and usually with only about 6 weeks notice. So usually I go into house hunting thinking if I hate it at least it’s not forever. Going on 5 years in the most hated location yet! But when I look back I can see all the reasons we needed to be where we are.

Things always work out, it’s just waiting around for that silver lining that stinks.

  4. I know how you feel. We bought our townhouse 2 years ago and that was a relatively easy decision. We knew we’d only be here a few years, so we didn’t strees too much about it. BUT, now we are wanting to move and we don’t know what time is right. Should we go in December (when hub’s master’s is done) or in the summer (when it’s easier to sell here) or in a few more years (when we’ve had a chance to pay off some debt and buy instead of rent…)

  5. I’m also in a decision making frenzy. Unfortunately, I have nothing to offer you, having no idea what I’m doing either.

I think I would go on the month to month thing and not get tied down until you have a better idea of what is going on with Steve’s work. It’s such a precarious thing.

That advice is worth what you paid for it, of course. :)

  6. I think you need to make a trip to the temple with your questions!

  7. Month to month keeps all your options open. If you find a house you LOVE you won’t be stuck trying to get out of a lease.

  8. I wish I had a crystal ball, baby. I hope you get a good answer soon!

  9. Oh Amber - that’s miserable! How horrible would it to be to buy a house and have prices drop and Steve’s work move 45 minutes away? Argh!

  10. Hey, trust me I understand the difficulty of what the future may or may not hold… I’d vote for month to month leasing until you know more… then you aren’t tied in and can make your decisions without worrying about what to do with your living space. Good luck!

  11. Any answers yet? I agree with the month to month thing. It sounds awful when you want permanence, but I think in the long run, when you can go when you need to go and be where you eventually want to be without a great, big selling headache, you’ll be glad you did.

We should meet at a park soon. I’m dying to meet the cake lady!

  12. Amber,
I don’t know, but we are in the same boat….So, make a decision, any decision, and we can see how it works out for you and see if we want to do the same thing. That would be very helpful for us, since we can’t be of any help to you.

  13. There is a house for rent by me!!! I would rent until you know for sure the certainty of where you are going to be.

Good luck to you though! Someday soon I will be well enough that we can play!

  14. It won’t let me leave any of my information! There is a house for rent by me!!! I would rent from month-to-month until you know where your future lies. I wouldn’t want to take the risk of being stuck. Dads commutes are far enough away as it is.

  15. […] Remember my housing conundrum?  I have a new one. I’ve spent the majority of this month looking for a house to rent.  I’ve seen a couple that looked good (and lots that didn’t) but they go so fast!  Also we’re not needing to rent until the end of September- so people don’t want to rent to us because they want their house rented Sept. 1.  Which makes sense.  But we have to give 30 days notice here that we’re leaving. That means that we’ll have to give notice before knowing where we’re headed.  More then a little scary.  It’s like stepping into the great abyss. Still- I’m pretty sure we’re going to do it.  Wish me luck! […]
