The Little Red Hen

So my new (humble) theory is that the more things I make from scratch the better. For several reasons.

-Steve’s trying to lower his sodium intake

-I can use food storage stuff up so we don’t have to move it again

-Frankly I can usually make it taste better then the stuff you’d buy at the store… (see- humble)

Anyway- Saturday I made bread. Real live bread from wheat I ground myself. Fabulous huh? The only problem was that Saturday morning I picked up Harry Potter. So I was not only baking bread but I was also reading. (Understatement of the century warning) A lot. So I let it rise too long the first time and it never really rose again- but it still tasted good.
Anyway- I’d seen a demonstration at Costco for these fabulous blenders that will blend up anything. I realized that I had that blender! One of the things that it does is grind wheat into flour. So I didn’t need a wheat grinder to start using the cases of wheat that we’d gotten for our first Christmas together from Steve’s mom.

So I made this:

Into this:

Into this:

I also made this:

Pretty cute but not nearly as tasty.

So what do you make from scratch? I’ve started bread- and I’ve also been doing spaghetti sauce lately.

  1. I have seen those blenders in Costco…I am impressed that you used your food storage! The bread looks yummy!

  2. Good job on the bread! I really rarely make bread, mostly just rolls and pancakes with my wheat.

  3. Jon makes his bread from scratch, but he just uses flour from the store, we don’t have enough room to buy whole wheat and store it, even in those cans, also we don’t have a wheat grinder. That blender looks awesome, but uh, I have a bathroom to redo first. . :)
I make granola from scratch. It’s soo yummy.

  4. Great post!
As for me…I make nearly everything from scratch, except for bread (and flour, and butter…). I have a killer recipe for pizza dough so we hardly order delivery any more. That could be a bad thing, though.

  5. Pizza! That’s another thing I’ve started making from scratch- the dough and the sauce. I prefer it over any restaurant pizza now.

  6. From scratch is great. My husband makes the best bread around! He’s perfected it over the years, and though we haven’t ground our own wheat yet, we’ve ground our own beef before.

  7. I can probably make anything from scratch, but I don’t take the time. The working full time to support a family thing is a real bitch. I would be a great stay at home mom.

I like to make spaghetti sauce too, because I can make it without sugar and it is practically a “free” food. Bottled sauce is FULL of sugar.

I made sloppy Joes the other day and used the brown sugar type Splenda. It was just as good as with sugar.

I think I am making more from scratch is my quest to move to more sugar free foods. It just takes so much time and makes the house hot.
